I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“She was scared.”
“Scared?”
“Not of the babies.”
He shook his head.
“She was afraid people would think she couldn't be a mother.”
My heart broke.
Rosie had wanted children for as long as I could remember.
But she had also heard people question what she could and couldn't do because she had Down syndrome.
She had internalized some of those doubts.
“She asked me once,” Ben said, “‘Do you think I can be a good mom?’”
“What did you say?”
“I told her she already was.”
“She wasn't even pregnant yet.”
“I know.”
He smiled.
“But she had already spent her whole life loving people.”
